About André
During my childhood I dreamt about becoming a veterinarian. When I was about 6 years old, I had a friend
in Honduras whose father was probably a good hunter. Their house boasted numerous hunting trophies
that absolutely fascinated me. Somehow, even though I lived in Central America, I knew what an elephant
was long before I knew what a cow was! This interest in nature was fuelled by my parent’s WWF magazine
subscription. Through self-study and observation, I have gained an extensive knowledge about Africa and
several other regions.
I operated a camera for the first time, in Curaçao, when I was about 11 years old. It was there that I
surprised my father, when he developed his Canon film, with photographs that he had not taken. Although
I was intrigued by image creation, I was more interested in drawing and building scale models. I strove
to make the models as lifelike as possible. This hobby taught me to see the end result before fulfilling
the idea. I used this technique automatically when I started photographing during my late teens.
My greatest source of inspiration is Mother Nature. Basically, I spend time in nature because of my personal
interest in animals and their behaviour, and not merely to take photographs. I have photographed on various
locations, such as my front garden in the city, the Serengeti and the Rockies. Generally, I try to distinguish
between the simple study of an animal or its behaviour, and peering intently through the lens of a camera. Nature
photography also poses its own challenges, such as the need to deal with the unpredictable (eg. the weather and
wild animals). However, because of its unpredictability, it is also filled with surprises. During my first safari
in Kenya, right near the lodge, I watched as a herd of African buffalo passed by. "How can I explain this feeling
back home?" raced through my mind. Photography became the perfect means of expression. This experience ultimately
led to the launch of Images of Nature...
