Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve is regarded as the largest protected area in Africa. It is approximately 50,000 km2. Selous is roughly southwest of Dar-es-Saalam, Tanzania, near the border of Mozambique. The landscape is quite diverse: forests, open grasslands, hills, rivers and lakes. The wild population is equally diverse: largest population of African elephants and buffalo. The many grazers indicate that it is an excellent habitat for lions, leopards and other carnivores. The lions found in Selous have an unusual trait, namely that they regularly hunt giraffe.

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti ecosystem is located in the north-western part of Tanzania and the southern part of Kenya. It consists of the Serengeti National Park, the Nogorongoro reserve in Tanzania and the National Park of the Masai Mara in Kenya. The Tanzanian part is enormous. It covers approximately 30,000 km2. It is a highland area with an average height of about 1,600 meters and peaks of more than 3,000 meters. Oldonio Lengai, the Masai mountain of God, is still an active volcano. In the Serengeti, one finds large numbers of zebra and elephant as well as herds of wildebeest. One of the greatest spectacles of nature can also be found occurring here: The great migration of the wildebeest and zebras. The Ngorongoro crater is also home to a fairly large population of black rhinos.
